Parents and coaches in Northeast Georgia have a new reason to celebrate. November 2008 marked the Grand Opening of North Georgia Sporting Goods at Old Clarkesville Mill.
The 7,000 sq ft store carries this region’s largest, most varied assortment of sporting equipment for every athlete in the family. Anthony Barrett, the former owner of a sporting goods store in Gainesville, moved to Habersham County a few years ago to retire. After several years of hitting a golf ball around, Barrett realized he wanted to do more with his time.
“The area needs a local sporting goods place that caters to their needs,” Barrett said.
Barrett’s business partner, Bob Washington, considers the venture to be a proactive step toward the future of Northeast Georgia. Washington has lived in Habersham County for over 25 years and raised his family here.
“This area is growing and the sports teams are thriving,” he said. “This business is a way to grow something for my family, as well,” he added.
With an emphasis on youth teams and county recreation sports, the new store has a wide base. “We service Habersham, White, Stephens, Banks and Rabun Counties,” Washington said.
“Any and all equipment associated with baseball, football, soccer, basketball, baseball, softball, gymnastics, volleyball, cheerleading and even swimming is available at North Georgia Sporting Goods,” Barrett said.
The store offers a wide assortment of athletic shoes, cleats, customized team uniforms and licensed apparel. “We are the only licensed dealer of Majestic Major League Baseball apparel and equipment in the area,” Barrett said “We also carry Rawlings, Wilson and other brand names,” he added.
The store is located in the front section of the Old Clarkesville Mill, right next to the recently opened YMCA gymnastics facility. For more information call 706-754-4511.
